More About Old Navy
The Old Navy is a retailing company owned by the U.S. multinational company Gap Inc. It operates in San Francisco, California’s Mission Bay district. Its flagship stores in New York, Seattle, Chicago, San Francisco, Manila and Mexico City are among the largest stores in Old Navy.
At the beginning of the 1990s, Dayton-Hudson Corporation (whose company was then the parent of Target, Mervyn, Dayton’s, Dudson’s, and Marshall Field’s) attempt to establish a newly branded division called Everyday Hero, a cheaper version of Gap.
In order to create a separate picture from the parent company Gap Inc., Gap Warehouse was renamed Old Navy Clothing Co. on 11 March 1994. The new shops were approximately 15 000 m2 (1400 m2) in comparison to Gap Warehouse stores less than 10 000 square feet (900 m2). The first Old Navy sites in the towns of Colma, San Leandro and Pittsburg in northern California began on 11 March 1994.
The stores in Old Navy have been designed as food shops, with running aisles, carts and small impulses near check-out counters, according to Kevin Lonergan of Gap’s managing director.
Cement flooring, metal shelving, and counters made of polished pressed board and galvanized metal have provided the stores with an industrial storage atmosphere and the colorful arrangements and large numbers of employees have separated them from other discount clothing stores.
The same year 42 other Old Navy stores opened, most of which had been renamed Old Navy in 45 Gap Warehouse stores.
In 1997 the Old Navy division first spent $1 billion in its first four years and opened 500 retailers by 2000. The Old Navy division was rapidly growing. With the opening of 12 stores in Ontario, Canada, in 2001, Old Navy began its international expansion.
